The bow tie is an iconic item of attire of Austrian economists. The exact origins of this tradition are mysterious, but it dates back at least as far as Murray Rothbard's time. The bow tie is sometimes associated with intellectuals, particularly professors and mid-20th century computer technicians who worked with machines involving dangerous moving parts that a regular tie could get caught in. Jeffrey Tucker frequently sports bow ties, and has stated, "In my own case, I started wearing them when I was in college, just because I learned how to tie them and I liked that they didn't get in the way. but once you start, you are stuck. Only later did I read that book called Dress for Success which recommends against them on grounds that people tend to suspect that bow tie wearers are secret 'bomb throwers.' There is probably truth in that!"[1]
