Secession is the voluntary assertion of a people for separation from a higher government, historically resulting from a series of grievances. It is a central idea in the classical liberal understanding of political order, as elucidated by Ludwig von Mises in Nation, State, and Economy (1919):
No people and no part of a people shall be held against its will in a political association that it does not want.
