The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines are a set of policies, promulgated by the U.S. Sentencing Commission, that federal judges are required to take into consideration when deciding what sentence to give a defendant. The U.S. Congress has sometimes intervened to require the Commission to amend the guidelines.[citation needed]
