Henry David Thoreau was an individualist anarchist who wrote Resistance to Civil Government and a number of essays defending abolitionist Captain John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry. He stated, "I do not wish to kill nor to be killed, but I can foresee circumstances in which both these things would be by me unavoidable."
