The Panama Canal is a 48-mile ship canal in Panama that connects the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean. It was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. In 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the United States to Panama, and the transfer became effective on December 31, 1999.
