The Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of a large amount of territory west of the Mississippi River by the United States from France. The treaty was signed April 30, 1803, and ratified by the United States Senate on October 20, 1803. The purchase was supported by President Thomas Jefferson but opposed by the Federalists.
